Saudi Arabia will provide help to Palestinian refugees in Lebanon and will fund the reconstruction of the Nahr el-Bared camp, which has been partially destroyed during the fierce fighting over the past week between the Lebanese army and the militants of Fatah al-Islam, according to the Saudi ambassador in Lebanon, Abdul Aziz al-Haja, who on Thursday met the premier Fouad Siniora, and other institutional figures in the country.
Haja added that Riyadh is ready to contribute if neccessary to the reconstruction of all the Palestinian refugee camps - there are 12 in total - in Lebanon. In recent months Saudi Arabia has taken an increasingly assertive diplomatic and mediatory role in the Middle East. It has take the initiative as a mediator in the standoff between Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas, inviting both sides to a recent summit in Mecca, the most holy of Islamic sites.
